What is basal cell carcinoma?

A skin cancer known as Basal cell carcinoma begins with the basal cells which is a type of cell in the skin that produces new skin. When the basal cells grow abnormally and cause growth on the skin that doesn’t heal, it eventually becomes destructive and spreads if not treated over time.

Causes of Basal cell carcinoma

This skin cancer occurs mostly on parts of the body that are exposed to the sun always such as the neck and face as a result of being exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun for a long time.

What are the symptoms of Basal cell carcinoma?

Symptoms of Basal cell carcinoma include translucent swelling or bump on the skin, growth, or skin patch. And the surest way to know whether you have Basal cell carcinoma is having a biopsy; a dermatologist removes the spot and examines it under a microscope to look for cancer cells.

Treatment of Basal cell carcinoma

Skin cancer condition is curable by both surgical and nonsurgical methods and the dermatologist determines the kind of treatment that would be used based on where the tumor is located, the size of the tumor, whether or not the tumor has been treated before, age of the patient and the general health and medical history of the patient.

Methods of treating Basal cell carcinoma

  • Cryotherapy: This method is nonsurgical and can easily be done by freezing the tissue using liquid nitrogen on the tumor, this will make the tumor fall away and allow the skin beneath it to heal.
  • Electrodessication and curettage: The dermatologist uses an anesthetic to numb the tumor then uses a curette to scrape off the tissue. After this is done, an electric needle is then used to control the bleeding and also destroy the cancer cells that may remain around the area where the tumor was curetted.
  • Laser surgery: Here the dermatologist uses highly focused light beams to vaporize the tumor.
  • Excision: In this case, the tumor is cut out and the Basal cell carcinomas are removed alongside some part of the normal skin.

The above methods are very feasible in cases where there are no high risks of reoccurrence or further complications.
