Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when your skin’s cells begin to grow abnormally. It is the most common type of cancer in the U.S and there are three main types of skin cancer depending on what cells are involved. For example, cancer that develops in the basal cells is called basal cell carcinoma. Those that develop in the squamous cell are called squamous cell carcinoma. While those that develop in the melanocytes (pigment-creating cells) are called melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Although it is the most common type of cancer, there are ways to prevent it. Summer is just around the corner and we have listed 5 effective ways to prevent this.

How to prevent skin cancer

Skin cancer is cancer caused by constantly being exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) rays, either through direct sunlight or artificial UV from tanning beds. Another common cause of skin cancer is using cancer-causing chemicals on the skin.

Fortunately, there are different ways of preventing skin cancer:

1. Use sunscreen

Since one of the major causes of skin cancer is overexposure to UV Rays, especially from the sun, it is only natural that you should protect yourself from the sun by using sunscreen.

However, you don’t just walk into any cosmetic store and select a random sunscreen. You have to select the best one. When selecting a sunscreen, note the expiry date (make sure it is still far) and the SPF level. Also, reapply every 2 hours for better performance. So, while you are soaking up the sun rays this summer, make sure to apply sunscreen.

2. Protect yourself from the sun

Although you can use sunscreen this summer, you still have to protect yourself from the sun, because let’s face it, the sun may have its benefits but it can also be very dangerous to the skin especially during summer – when it is the hottest.

To protect yourself from the sun, these should be among your list of summer outfits:

  • Sunglasses
  • Face cap
  • Shades
  • Sun hat
  • Loose but long cloth coverings, e.g., long sleeves made with light fabrics.

3. No tanning beds

You are at a higher risk of getting the condition if you are constantly exposed to tanning (artificial tanning). This is because tanning operates with deep UV light, which damages the skin and eventually leads to cancer. Constant UV radiation can also cause premature aging.

4. Avoid the sun

With the sun still being our major concern, you should avoid the sun between 10 am and 4 pm because that is when the heat of the sun is at its peak. If you must go out, go with an umbrella, put on some sunscreen, and wear a sun-protecting outfit.

5. See a dermatologist

To successfully ensure that you are at a very low risk of getting skin cancer, you should visit your local dermatologist at least twice a year for a professional skin examination. Also, consult your dermatologist before purchasing any cream for your skin.
