PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. This treatment uses your own growth factors found in your platelets to stimulate repair and regeneration of tissues. When you have this treatment, your doctor will draw blood, most likely from your arm. This is then placed in a centrifuge which separates the platelets into platelet rich plasma. The doctor then either injects the PRP into your skin or uses microneedling to help it penetrate your skin.
It’s uses
PRP is used to treat a variety of different skin issues. Three commons one include:
- Fine lines and wrinkles. These issues pop up as we begin to age, leaving us looking older than we are or feel. It is often used to encourage new collagen production which helps eliminate or reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Scars can leave people feeling self conscious if they are large enough or in an area that everyone can easily see. It can help reduce the appearance of scars so you can feel more confident. Keep in mind, multiple treatments may be needed to give you the results you want. Your doctor will be able to discuss tis more with you at your consultation.
- Hair loss. Both men and women deal with early hair loss. This can leave people feeling less than their best and concerned about how to hide bald patches or areas with thinning hair. PRP is often used to encourage and promote hair growth, giving you your confidence back.
Is it for you?
Though PRP can be used to treat more than the three issues we highlight here, it may not be the best option for everyone. It works best on patients who are in good health. You must also have platelet counts and hemoglobin counts within the required ranges. Your doctor will be able to assess your history and needs and decide if PRP is a good option for you.
