Microneedling can be used to treat a variety of skin issues for Charlotte, NC residents. It can heal acne scars, scars from injuries, stretch marks, and more. Though this noninvasive treatment is generally safe with few side effects, it may not be the best option for everyone.
How it works
Before you can know if microneedling is a good option for you, you should know how it works. When you have this treatment, your dermatologist will use a pen with small needles that are precisely spaced. These needles puncture the surface of the skin and create invisible, vertical, micro perforations in the top layers of the skin. This triggers your skin to kick its repair system into high gear and start producing collagen and elastin, the two agents that give skin its elasticity. This new, healed skin will appear over the damaged area or areas you are having treated.
But is it right for you?
Though microneedling is appealing to many, it may not be the best option for everyone. You would not be a good candidate for microneedling if:
- You have open cuts or wounds on your skin
- Have used Accutane within the last 3 months
- Have active acne
- Are pregnant or breast feeding
- Have a history of poor wound healing, or an illness that makes it difficult for you to heal
- Have skin cancer
These are not the only reasons microneedling may not be for you. Your dermatologist will work with you to determine if it is a good option. Be sure to be honest about your medical history so they can make an accurate recommendation for you.
