- Wash your face twice daily. This can help keep pores clear. If you are unsure what type of cleanser to use, or if just water will suffice, ask your dermatologist for a recommendation. If you sweat a lot, be sure to wash your face as well as sweat can clog your pores and cause acne breakouts.
- Use lukewarm water. Though washing your face with cold water can be tempting on a hot day, it is not recommended. Make sure you use lukewarm water when washing your face. It should not be too hot or too cold.
- Choose alcohol-free products. These are much gentler on your skin. Astringents or cleansers with alcohol can irritate your skin, causing redness and dry skin, which can make acne appear much worse.
- Use your fingertips. Though there are many products out there to use to scrub your skin, you should use your fingertips to apply cleanser to your face. Washcloths and mesh scrubbers can irritate your skin, which can irritate your acne. Your fingertips are much gentler.
- Shampoo oily hair. You may not realize it, but oil from your hair can go down into your hairline and cause acne there and in your face. If you have oil hair, make sure you shampoo frequently, preferably daily, to keep the oil under control and from causing acne along your hairline.
- Don’t touch your face. As much as possible, avoid touching your face throughout the day. Frequent touching can cause acne flareups since you are transferring germs and oil from your hands to your face.
- Don’t pick or pop. Though some people find it satisfying, you should not pop a pimple or pick it. Let it heal naturally. Picking or popping it can increase your risk of getting acne scars. It is better to just let it heal on its own,
