What is Mohs surgery
Mohs surgery, also known as Mohs micrographic surgery was developed by Frederic E. Mohs in the 1930s. It is a specific type of surgical procedure for the removal of skin cancer. It is most commonly used for basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. The goal with this type of surgery is to remove all the cancerous cells while also retaining as much of the surrounding healthy tissue as possible. This surgery is therefore mostly performed in areas of the body where it is extremely important to save as much skin as possible. An example could be facial areas where it is important to retain as much healthy tissue in order to not alter the patient’s facial features as much as required. This type of surgery is also common with cancers that have reoccurred and have yet to spread. It gets rid of the cancer before it even gets the opportunity to spread.
Advantages of Mohs surgery
Top dermatologists in Charlotte obviously prefer to use Mohs surgery method wherever possible for a reason. It simply has a ton of benefits as compared to the traditional approach for the removal of skin cancer. Following are some top advantages for choosing Mohs surgery:
- Less scaring as only a small area is being removed
- Can be performed under a local anesthetic instead of general anesthesia
- Can be safely performed on seniors and fragile people
- Can more accurately remove all the cancerous cells as it uses microscopic technology
- Can be performed in-office instead of a surgical unit
What happens during surgery
Once the anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon will remove the topmost layer of the tumorous skin along with a layer of tissue underneath. They will then take the tissue sample with them to the lab for further examination. They will analyze which areas of the tissue contain cancerous cells. They will then go back to the site of the tumor and remove more tissue from the specific area which showed to contain cancerous cells. They will continue this process until the final tissue sample contains no cancerous cells. This procedure is very specific and doesn’t remove more cells than needed. It is therefore usually preferred to the traditional approach of removing cancerous cells.
