Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells of the skin, start producing too much pigment. But, what causes this to happen? There are many possibilities, including:

  1. Medications come with side effects, and some can cause hyperpigmentation of the skin. That’s why it is so important, to be honest with your doctor about the medications you are taking. If this is the underlying cause, their treatment options will likely not be successful as long as you continue to take the medicine.
  2. Trauma to the skin. This can include cuts, burns, even surgical incisions. These can cause hyperpigmentation as your skin may kick into overdrive trying to heal from the trauma it experienced.
  3. Inflammation of the skin. Hyperpigmentation can occur after you’ve experienced something such as a rash, acne, or severely dry skin. This type of hyperpigmentation is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
  4. Reaction to certain cosmetics. If you use a product that irritates your skin or you are allergic to, your skin may react by producing too much pigmentation.
  5. This often occurs after sun exposure or hormonal changes associated with pregnancy. This type of hyperpigmentation primarily affects the face.

If your hyperpigmentation is caused by something such as pregnancy or medications, your doctor will likely see if it clears up on its own after you have the baby or quit the medication. In the meantime, they can help you minimize its appearance and offer suggestions to help protect your skin going forward as well.
