Before your appointment, you may want to know how exactly microneedling treatments works. This custom treatment uses a special device called the Rejuvapen. This device utilizes precisely spaced microneedles to create invisible micro perforations in the top layers of your skin.
These perforations trigger your skin to start to repair itself by producing collagen and elastin, which are what gives your skin its elasticity. As your skin heals, it becomes firmer and leaves your skin’s overall condition much improved, which is why microneedling can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, and even reduce the appearance of scars.
The procedure
Now that you know how microneedling works to repair your skin, let’s walk you through what to expect at your appointment.
- Check in. You’ll, of course, need to check in for your appointment. You will likely need to answer some questions and fill out paperwork when you arrive. Your doctor’s office can advise you on what you should bring to this appointment.
- A topical may be applied. Though microneedling should not be painful, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the area that is being treated to keep you as comfortable as possible. This will need about 30 to 45 minutes to sit after it is applied.
- Next, it’s time for your treatment. Your dermatologist will use the Rejuvapen to start the microneedling treatment. It will take about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and how many areas you are having treated.
After treatment
Though the microneedling treatment itself is relatively simple, you do need to follow aftercare instructions from your doctor. This will include only using tepid water on your face for the first 48 hours, no rubbing your face, and no makeup for 12 hours following treatment.
