Acne is a skin condition that impacts people of all ages in Charlotte, NC and around the world. In fact, an estimated 40 to 50 million people in the United States alone are struggling with acne at any given time. This can lead people to try anything and everything to in an attempt to stop breakouts and make pimples go away faster. But, in our haste to reduce the appearance of acne, we may actually be making it worse. Discover five common acne treatment mistakes and what you should do instead.
- Trying new products every few weeks. When we don’t see results from our acne treatment program right away, it can be tempting to switch to a new one. But, acne treatments take time to work. A good rule of thumb is to try a treatment for six to eight weeks before deciding if it working for you or not. You probably will never get good results if you keep trying new products every one to two weeks.
- Sleeping in your makeup. It’s a common saying, to never go to sleep with your makeup on. Yet, many people do. This can actually cause acne and irritate your face. Instead, make sure you remove your makeup each night. If you’re too tired to do anything else before you hit the hay, take off your makeup.
- Sharing makeup. Sharing makeup with friends is a fun way to try out new products. But, it can also irritate your face. Though acne is not contagious, sharing makeup and makeup brushes can transfer bacteria, oil, and even dead skin cells from them to you, leading to clogged pores and more breakouts. Instead, make sure you are the only one using your makeup and be sure to clean your brushes regularly.
